Father Gavril, from the Lesnovo Monastery, was a great consolation to the few true Christian communities (Christians with their own spiritual father, with a rule for spiritual struggle, who regularly fasted, confessed and received communion), who at that time, from 1983 to 1987 (the years we spent together), in R. Macedonia were scattered like small oases of salvation in the desert of atheism and Christian nominalism (Christianity only by name). As far as I remember, such communities existed in Skopje, Prilep, Strumica and Tetovo. If I have left someone out, may they forgive me.

With what I have written, I would like to share with you some advice and moments from our life together with Father Gavril in the Lesnovo Monastery, as well as from his rare visits to Skopje.

God always sends consolation to His people, just as Father Gavrill was to us at that time. Each time brings its own difficulties in fulfilling God’s commandments and in spreading the word of truth, but also it brings its own reliefs. I would not go into the comparison of the conditions then and present conditions, but one thing is certain – The tradition of true faith and true works is one and the same, then and now. This twofold Tradition, on a personal-catholic (universal, congregational) level, comes down to the prayer of the mind in the heart – “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”, and on a catholic-personal level comes down to a concrete and living, compassionate participation in the Eucharist of the Church.

 Отец Гаврил, од Лесновскиот манастир, беше голема утеха за малкуте вистински христијански заедници (христијани со свој духовен отец, со правило за духовен подвиг, кои редовно постеа, се исповедаа и се причестуваа), кои во тоа време, од 1983 до 1987 година (годините што ги поминавме заедно), во Р. Македонија беа распрснати како мали оази за спас во пустината на атеизмот и христијанскиот номинализам (христијанство само по име). Колку што се сеќавам, такви заедници постоеjа во Скопје, Прилеп, Струмица и во Тетово. Ако некого сум изоставил, нека ми прости. Со напишаново сакам да ви пренесам некои совети и моменти од нашиот заеднички живот со отец Гаврил во Лесновскиот манастир, како и од неговите ретки посети во Скопје.

Бог во секое време им испраќа на Своите луѓе утеха, како што и нам ни беше отец Гаврил во тоа време. Секое време си носи свои тешкотии при исполнувањето на Божјите заповеди и при ширењето на словото на вистината, но и свои олеснувања. Не би навлегувал во споредба на тогашните и сегашните услови, но едно е сигурно – Преданието на вистинската вера и на вистинските дела е едно и исто, и тогаш и сега. Ова двоедно Предание, на лично-соборно ниво, се сведува на умно-срдечната молитва – „Господи Исусе Христе, помилуј ме“, а на соборно-лично ниво се сведува на конкретно и живо, сострадално учество во Евхаристијата на Црквата.

THE “INVISIBLE” OF THE SAINTS

Monks are strange people. Rather, they are not ordinary earthly people, but heavenly ones,

who deliberately hide the light of their soul under a dark garment. (…)

They are armed by God with strength to withstand centuries and millennia. (…)

For them, who have stepped out of time and stepped into eternity,

the time of 2000 years is like one day[1],

and how much can a person change in one day?

Of the holy person whom I dare to write, I am not even worthy to think of, and yet, I even bear his name. I am asking the Saint to forgive me, but also to bless me, and to enlighten my thoughts so that I can successfully finish writing this short hagiography of him as one of my smallest gifts and expression of gratitude towards him.

We come from the same city and even from the same neighbourhood, and, unfortunately, I do not remember him. I know that when I joined the church and when I started going regularly to church, reading spiritual literature, fasting and praying, I was compared to someone like Mijalche, and I did not know at all that Mijalche was, in fact, Father Gavril the Athonite and that one day I will be honoured by God to be the inheritor of his name (God willing, also inheritor of the way of his holy life, but I am far from that).

I had heard about him from my parents and the closest neighbours who knew him. They told me that once, when he came to the house where he was born, he noticed our childlike curiosity and called us to his house together with my friend, gave us candies and spoke to us. That is how time passed for a few days, and then he left and never came back. To my joy or regret, it is my only meeting with this holy man, who was close to us, yet so far away.

„НЕВИДЛИВИОТ“ ОД СВЕТИИТЕ

Чудни луѓе се монасите. Попрво, тие не се обични земни луѓе, туку надземни,

кои светлината на својата душа смерно ја кријат под темното одејание. (…)

Од Бога се вооружени со сила зa да им се спротивставуваат на вековите и милениумите. (…)

За нив, кои излегле од времето и зачекориле во вечноста,

времето од 2000 години е како еден ден[1],

а за еден ден колку може човек да се смени?

За светата личност за која се дрзнувам да пишувам, не сум достоен ниту да помислам, а јас дури и неговото име го носам. Го молам светителот да ми прости, но и да ме благослови, и да ми ја просветли мислата успешно да го завршам пишувањето на ова негово кратко житие како еден мој најмал дар и благодарност кон него.

Потекнуваме од ист град, па дури и од исто маало, а јас, за жал, не го паметам. Знам дека кога се воцрковив и кога почнав редовно да одам на црква, да читам духовна литература, да постам и да се молам, ме споредуваа со некој си Мијалче, а воопшто не знаев дека тој Мијалче, всушност, е отец Гаврил Светогорецот и дека еден ден ќе се удостојам од Господ да бидам наследник на неговото име (дај Боже и на начинот на неговиот свет живот, ама далеку сум јас од тоа).

За него имам слушано уште од моите родители и првите соседи што го познаваа. Ми раскажуваа дека една година, кога дошол во својата родна куќа, ја забележал нашата детска љубопитност и нѐ викнал кај него дома заедно со другарчето, ни дал бонбончиња и ни зборувал. Така неколку дена, а потоа заминал и не се вратил повеќе. На моја радост или жал, тоа е мојата единствена средба со овој свет човек, кој ни бил блиску, а толку далеку.

Christ is born!

How can we chant this feast without mentioning the One through whom everything happened. The Most-Holy Theotokos, the one who gave birth to our Saviour. The one who gave Herself completely to serve God and the one who lived Her whole life worthily without sin, in order for Her womb to be dignified and to bodily receive the Omnipotent One, the One who came to save man.

Her role is irreplaceable in the entire dispensation of God’s salvation, for our salvation. Without Her, nothing would have happened of that which did happen. Without Her, our Saviour would have not been born. Without Her we would have not received our reconciliation with God. Without Her, the true sun of enlightenment would not have risen. Without Her, the salvation of the world would not have come. And that is why, we should be grateful to Her more than anyone else.
